Remembering the fallen

The shooting of two journalists in Virginia shook the press around the nation. It was no different at our newsroom.

It rocked us at the core. There’s an unspoken assumption, that we’re all invulnerable. This reminded everyone that we aren’t.

It also pulled people together, and it’s hard to look at a tragedy in such a light. But the way our team has handled their emotions over the past few weeks is really starting to show. This team is a family. You can see it in this video.

Television news is doing a great disservice to their viewers.

1530325_10153670879325503_1445534396_n  For me, newspapers – and their online products – will always do a better job in covering the news than radio or television.
Not only is it more stimulating to the mind to read information than to absorb it from watching TV, the quality and accuracy of print and Internet news outlets far outweighs that of TV news broadcasts.
It also seems television is more likely to be slaves to time and sales. Because of these limitations, both time and advertising, the average user will still be far better informed from reading an article than watching a package that runs for two minutes at the most. Only so much information can be condensed into a certain amount of time.
Their inability to really delve into the stories, and draw the ethical lines between sales and news… that’s why TV will never truly do the full justice it should when it comes to serving the public.
TV news has made the public lazy, and because of it, they are not as informed as they should be.

I’ve got the itch…

It has to be scratched.

I’ve got the feeling that I need some change before too long. I’m not sure exactly what that means, but I know that within the next two months, I’ll be moving in to a new apartment-with no roommate.

I guess I’ll just wait and see if that’s the fix I need.

My two-year anniversary at the newspaper is coming up in June.

I turn 25 in less than two weeks.

I just want my next home, a place that is really mine.

Game Night

After one year of working here, I can honestly say I’ve changed. I’ve become better. I’ve learned a lot, from each of my coworkers. I’ve learned more about page design and building graphics, and in essence, putting together a newspaper.I could technically put together a solid product on my own, but I’d rather not.

My boss has taught me to trust my instincts. I’m not sure why she has so much blind faith in us. She trusts us.

There’s so much room for screw-ups, and it’s scary. But we learn through mistakes, right?

Anyway, I’ve attached a full issue of Game Night. I’m currently using the summer to build up a stronger product. I’m hoping to have more solid contribution to it this year, but it looks as if I’ll be on my own once again.

It’s an ongoing battle to be better. Luckily, I don’t give up easily.

Sometimes, the world doesn’t need Superman. Sometimes, it simply needs Clark Kent.

I’ll take off the glasses when the need arises.

Very proud of tomorrow’s pages…

My coworker is a much better page designer than I am. I keep trying to learn new tricks from him, and they usually pay off. But I love it best when we collaborate.
